Summer. Summer 2026. Le Grand Départ.

For Summer 2026, for my Grand Départ, I will keep a sporadic, reasonably regular record of journey. With opinions. Of course with opinions. Otherwise what would be the point.

For my trip I’ll be bringing my Delll Laptop with Ubuntu. For the writing, I’ll be doing everything in Joplin. Maps will be a verion of either Gnome Maps or KDE Marble, depending on what I want and how detialedand / or graphical I want the image. The image below, for example, if a screen export from Gnome Maps, showing a route from Budapest to Prague, via Bratislava and Vienna. Oh Vienna.

Gnome Maps I find to be very good. There are no Google adverts in it, which is good. It can be used off line, which is excellent. It will do a multi’ stop route and it will route using the car, the bike or the foot. The routing will be very different depending on which one is chosen. The image is a bike route. Why not ‘eh.

Finally, I will be posting to my website, which is where you are reading this worthy words and I’ll be sending out a notification through Monnett. For those not familiar with Monnett, you can read about here and with a download available through the Aurora Store as well as the usual data snaffling tax dodgers at Gapple. Or is it Goople. If I can manage it I will also post through my Mastodon account, here .

You never know, I may even post something before I leave; I have some thoughts about the state of public transport in Dublin. It’s not good.
